Can I host a Bubble Party in my living room?

Hands up who’s worried about playing with bubbles indoors and making a mess of their home at their kid’s birthday party or play date?

Everyone - right!? We know that bubbles are made from detergents, that detergents can be slippery, and that kids and bubbles can make a big mess. Plus we don’t want our home or décor destroyed. These are valid concerns.

But don’t worry, when I perform my indoors Magical Bubble Show I bring a large plastic tarpaulin 3m x 2.5m, which I then cover with floor cloths & mats - so there’s no mess and it’s not slippery.  As I am the one creating the bubbles, I am also the one controlling where the bubbles will land.  They will land on my mats and not all over your beautiful home.

My free standing stage backdrop adds an extra level of protection for you too. My backdrop can be place anywhere, I.E. in front of a TV or a painting that you want to keep safe, in front of a sideboard with sentimental Knick knacks on it.  It will block bubbles from landing on your precious items. Plus add a great backdrop for taking amazing shots of your child and the bubbles during your party.

But what happens if the bubbles do land on my floor and make it slippery?

The best way to clean up is to use a dry cloth or towel to wipe up the excess liquid and then spray it with an alcohol mix i.e. a hand sanitizer. Yep that's right, another use for the dreaded hand sanitizer! Hand sanitizer has alcohol in it that cuts through the soapiness of bubbles and gets rid of the slipperiness. I actually make my own hand sanitizer from a mix of 75% water and 25% Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA 70%). I use this mixture to clean the bubble soap off my hands at the end of the show and if there's any slips on the floor then I use it to wipe the floor down. So after my show your family is clean and safe – bonus!

But a black backdrop is boring and not colourful enough.

You are specifically booking a bubble show, so the stars of the show should be the bubbles, right? Bubbles are best photographed against dark backgrounds.  Bubbles reflect light back to us and the different wave lengths of light, bouncing of different thicknesses of the soap films create beautiful swirls of amazing colours on their surface.  However if you put a brightly coloured backdrop behind the bubbles you won’t be able to see the bubble’s amazing colours.  Again your child & the bubbles are the stars of the show – so let’s highlight them, especial for the finale when I place your child inside their very own huge bubble. Make sure you have you camera ready to capture this amazing moment.

Notice that you can’t see the bubbles on the light and brightly coloured backgrounds

Can you perform in front of my glass windows/patio doors?

I can, however your photos will be backlit and your child’s face will be dark, unless you are hiring a professional photographer who uses a flash.  To make sure your Lil’ Star is the star of your photos; I suggest setting up against a solid wall with a good light source.

My apartment is too small for a bubble show!

Another concern I hear from clients, is that “I don't have enough space in my living room, or my apartment here in Singapore is too small. 3 m x 3 m is huge”.  “I don’t have a tape measure and I can’t measure my space”.

Okay, let's stop and do some simple comparisons to items in your home, let’s say a TV. They are huge they are approximately 1.20m wide so if you imagine all you need to have is two widths to 2.5 widths of a TV and that's more than enough space to perform a show in.  Or look at your sofa; a 2 seater is approx. 140cm wide and a 3 seat is approx. 2mm wide. Another easy way to measure is to use your arms, cuz generally speaking your arm span it's the same as your height, so if you know your height stretch out your arms and that will be approximately the same as your height. Now you can use your arms span to roughly measure off your space. I'm petite, I'm only 1.5m, so when I measure I need two arm spans and that's more than enough space. I bet you're a lot taller than me so you probably only need 1.5 spans or 1.25 arm spans and that would be more than enough space. Generally speaking the area in front of the TV with a cleared space, pushing back the sofas is plenty of room. And the great thing at the moment is, as we can only have a few close friends so you don't need a huge amount of space for your guests to sit. Just push back the sofas create some space in front of the TV and your guests can either sit on the floor or sit on the sofas.

I have actually performed in some tiny apartments. A few years ago, way before Circuit Breaker, I performed in a tiny two bed apartment. There was no space even to push the furniture around, so I just worked within a 1.2m x 1m space between the door and the sofa. Here I am, dressed as that famous icy princess performing my show in a tiny apartment with everybody crammed in. It was so small that they actually had to put the buffet table in the lift corridor and all the aunties & uncles decamp to the lift lobby with their plastic stools. By the time I came to leave everybody was blocking the lift doors. Trying to maneuver trollies over hundreds of shoes and stools in a dress with a train – laughs all round!
